Gill Friends for Paper Players #432

HI Everyone.  Happy Sunday.

It's the fabulous Claire's turn to host our Paper Players challenge this week and it's a theme challenge.  It's also the first week playing alongside our new Guest Designer Windy Ellard.  Welcome, Windy.  So happy to have you on the team!

Here's Claire's challenge:

Now, I made my card for this challenge a few weeks ago and noticed yesterday that several of us had used butterflies for our cards, so I decided to make a new card using a technique I had seen on JenniferMcGuireInk using new products from the Hero Arts Monthly Kit.  I didn't have the items that Jennifer used, but was able to dig something out of my stash :-)  It's a set from My Favorite Things called "Gill Friends".  I'd never made a shadow box card before, so it was fun deciding what to put and where to put the elements.

I began by blending a background with distress inks and blending them with my new makeup brushes.  I then added some splashes of water and a few bubbles at the bottom of the scene from an old stencil.  I stamped, colored and die-cut the elements and set about creating my card.   Of course, I couldn't help myself and had to add some shimmer and shine to the fish:-)

Here's a closeup – you can see that one of the fish – the blue blowfish – is suspended on a piece of acetate to help with the feeling of depth on the card.  Some of the other fish were adhered to the background using thin pop up foam squares and the purple one was adhered behind the front panel.

I love the idea of the pop-up shadow box.  As it was the first time I had made one it did take a little time to get it all put together, but I do have other ideas for it using other stamp sets, so do think I will make another one.

In the meantime, here's my full card:

On a personal note:

I did manage to get into my craft room yesterday to make this card, but that was all I managed to do as I didn't have a lot of time.  Mind you, I wasn't going anywhere yesterday because…. yes… you guessed it… it snowed A G A I N!  Mind you… we were supposed to have between 8-13 and probably only had 4.  So, I am taking that as a good thing.  I think Lou feels the same way, too as he has less to shovel this morning.  It's the layer of ice from the freezing rain that came before the snow, that might cause him a little trouble on the driveway!  The freezing rain, followed by snow, makes the wetland look so beautiful this morning.  It really is a winter wonderland.  I thought you might like to see a photo of just how pretty it looks.

I love these sunny winter days, where the sky is a pale light blue and the sun shines down on the snow.  It makes me happy.  It's very different to the winter days where I grew up.  Short days, long nights, dull, grey skies, wet and windy.  The cold is so damp that it gets into the very marrow of your bones.  So different to the low humidity cold that we get here.

I'll be back later in the week.  In the meantime, warm hugs and prayers for those of you who need a little lift tonight – and thanks for stopping by my blog.

hugs
Jaydee

  1. I love your underwater scene! This card is really special, and it sounds like so fun to make too. We didn’t get as much snow as predicted either, but enough..ugh. Prolly about 9 inches…better then the foot expected!

  2. What a fabulous little underwater scene you created Jaydee – those little sparkly colourful rainbow fish make me yearn for warm Caribbean waters, especially at this time of year! I haven’t made one of those cards for ages – it really suits this set!

  3. This water scene is awesome Jaydee! I love the shiny fish and all the colors! Thank you for the warm welcome as a guest designer! Excited to design alongside you!

  4. Wow, Jaydee! The pop-up shadow box design is awesome…especially when paired with the underwater scene. Whoever receives this card is one lucky person!

  5. Jaydee, this is absolutely adorable! The shadow box design is perfect to showcase this underwater scene. I love the shimmer and shine you added as well. Such a “WOW” card!

  6. thanks, Laurie. It really was fun to make. I need to find some other sets to use for similar cards.
hope you are enjoying the spring thaw!

  7. Joanne, you are right… it does resemble an underwater scene from the warm, blue waters of the Caribbean!
