All About Elephants and blog candy winners

Hi Everyone.  Happy Tuesday night.

I'd like to start by quoting Robin "Oh, my!  These are funny!"  She was right!  You guys rocked the Elephant Trivia with a) your correct answers and b) your amusing answers.  When I read some of them I was so glad I wasn't drinking something – otherwise I would have had to clean my computer screen!

So… before I share the blog candy winners, let's have a look at what separates African and Asian elephants.  And, no, it's not Lynn's hilarious suggestion of "made in China" stamped on his behind, either! 🙂

Those of you who chose – EAR SIZE.  Are absolutely spot on.  That is certainly the most noticeable difference.  However, size is relative.  I mean, if I told the man from the moon that the Petronas Towers were taller than the Empire State Building – that wouldn't help him unless he saw both together.

If… you don't have the two side by side, here's a quick way to tell.

The African elephant's ears generally come down to his tusks.

The Asian elephant's ears come down to the top of the trunk.

So… if you are looking at an elephant and his ears come just below his eyes and not down his trunk… you know for sure it's an Asian elephant

And… as you can see, the African elephant does indeed have ears in the shape of Africa.

Now…. what happens if you can't see the ears and you can only see the trunk?  Well, this is a great trivia question over dinner!!!

The way to tell an African elephant from an Asian elephant when you can only see the trunk is this…

The African elephant has TWO protruberances on the end of his trunk – one on either side.  You can think of it as an index finger and a thumb….. the Asian elephant, on the other hand (or is that trunk? :-)…) has only ONE.  So, you can think of it as just an index finger.

One last trivia question for you.  What's so special about this little guy – and what does he have to do with elephants?

Dassie

Well.  I can tell you, that I had tremendous fun reading all of your comments.  I really do appreciate you all playing along.

To thank you – I chose two winners at random from the correct answer category and the funny category.  I wrote the names on a piece of paper, scrunched them up and then had my able four-pawed helper, Bilbo, choose the winners. Those of you who answered correctly, and left a funny comment, got entered into both.

And the winners are –

Linda McCullough – her answer was:  Asian elephants go to Bingo–African elephants stay home!

and

Patricia Phipps – her answer was:  I think the ears are bigger and look like Africa if looking at a map, maybe.

Congratulations Linda and Patricia.  Please could you send me an email at [email protected] with your snail mail addresses and I will send along a free Stampin' Up! stamp set.

Also…. Sally Davis….. please could you teach Lou – oh, and the people I work with, that whatever I say has to be right :-)  I loved your comment.  Sally said: It is an African elephant because Jaydee said it is an African elephant. And that's the truth!

If you haven't read all of the answers, don't forget to pop along right here and check them out!

I'll be back with a new card tomorrow.

Have a wonderful Wednesday everyone.  I hope it is a fabulous day where you are.

Prayers tonight for those who continue to be affected by the flooding.  Also for those of you who need a little lift or a warm hug.

As always – thank you for visiting my blog!

Hugs

Jaydee

  1. Congratualations to the winners of the blog candy, some great answers! Jaydee the picture of the animal you have shown is a Rock Hyrax known in Africa as a Dassie or Rock Rabbit. They are not overly big – average 50 cm and weight is an average of 4kg. They also have a pair of upper tusk like teeth similar to an elephant.

  2. Congrats to the winners and way to got *MAW* . . . Now with that said, where is a card for today? Hum, Jaydee are you slacking on us? : )

  3. Congrats winners! It was fun to read the creative answers. I attempted to answer but for some reason my comments as of late have been zinging off into space and not staying on the Stampin’ with Jaydee blog. I’ll add a little double stick tape to this one and hope it stays!
I’m a bit partial to the little creature that you have pictured today Jaydee. This little guy is called a Rock Dassie, as Jan said, and is the closest living relative to an elephant. And yep he is only about the size of a tame rabbit. Little known fact about the Rock Dassies that live on top of Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa–they tend to be shy creatures but are very very attracted to 11 year old American boys with open cans of Sprite soda! We unsuccessfully looked all over the top of the mountain for the dassies only to be mobbed by them in the visitor center when Logan sat down with his soda. Certainly one of our favorite memories of our vacation. Thanks for bringing back that happy thought Jaydee, especially right now as we are preparing for Logan’s graduation, I am in need of memories of my baby boy!
Happy Hump Day One and All, and warm thoughts and prayers to all those in need.

  4. What an unusual animal, thanks for the info, I have never seen a picture of the rock rabbit, interesting.

  5. What a fun and interesting post! I learned more about elephants this morning then I had expected to. I also had a good chuckle at Cherie’s comment above about that curious little guy in the last photo. It’s always such a treat to stop by and visit your blog. 🙂
