Stampin’ Up! Match Day for Hand Stamped Sentiments #486

Happy Saturday.

I had some time to craft yesterday (in between chosing tiles for the bathroom update!) and found a challenge that perfectly fit a new set that I just received from Stampin’ Up! I know I have said this before, but I seriously have no idea how these packages of crafty goodness keep arriving :-). It’s a set called Match Day and comes with some fabulous designer series paper. The challenge across at Hand Stamped Sentiments was what inspired me to use this set.

Here’s a sneak peek:

And here’s the challenge badge from Hand Stamped Sentiments that inspired this card:

I began with a piece of of the DSP that has a football (the English version, not the version played with lots of padding!) 🙂 field on it. It has markings that would have been made by the coach to explain better manoevers for the players. I added that to a black base with a couple of extra layers of cardstock behind it to lift it from the base.

I then stamped the jersey and sentiment. I stamped the jersey with Versamark and heat set it with with embossing powder using blue cardstock. I’ll reveal the reason for using blue later! I then die-cut the goal net using vellum and backed it with a piece cut from white cardstock.

The last two items I die cut were the whistle (from silver metallic cardstock) and the football which was diecut with black and then adhered to a circle I cut using white cardstock. To finish off the whistle I added some black and white twine and then arranged everything on the base. I finished off the card with a white star from the Wonderful Stars Puffy Stickers set that comes with the Match Day Suite.

Here’s my full card:

On a personal note:

So, why blue? Well, it’s a long story, but I promise I’ll keep it short. My home town is recognized as the home of football. It’s home to the world’s first football team, and the first football stadium. So, you can imagine that football is in our blood :-). Well, the city is also home to (currently) two football teams that have very strong rivalry – as do the supporters! One of the teams wears red and white, the other blue and white. My immediate family were very strong supporters of the blue and white team. So, you can imagine my hesitance to tell my father that I was (briefly) dating a player from the red and white team! Anyway, if I had created a card featuring anything but a blue and white jersey both my father and my brother would come back to haunt me in the worst possible way! So, blue it was.

Football also runs very strongly in the blood of my immediate family. When my brother was about 15 or so, he was scouted by the under 18 Manchester United team. To be scouted by them means you had to be REALLY good. Sadly, my father really didn’t think it was a good idea so refused to sign the papers to let my brother play. His second daughter turned out to be an ace player, too. She was so good that the school football team petition the headmaster, sportsmaster and teachers to allow her to play on their team. They agreed and changed the rules to allow a girl to play. This was long before girls teams were a thing. She played for the team for the rest of her school career. As for me. I played football once as part of a work team building exercise. However, I ended up breaking my big toe in the first couple of minutes of the match, ending my (not so budding) football career :-). As an aside, my genealogy research turned up a famous footballer in my extended family, so there must be something in the genes 🙂

I’ll be back tomorrow with my Paper Players card. In the meantime, warm hugs and prayers for those of you who need a little lift tonight.

Card recipe:

  1. Darling card and I love your story about your family and you. I never played football or soccer, but played a lot of volleyball in my younger days. Thanks for sharing and here’s a hug.

  2. Really fun card, Jaydee! I will probably end up getting at least that DSP as my kiddo is in soccer right now. He’s young enough that it his highly entertaining for me, who has no interest in sports at all, to watch the games–shoes go flying, kids try to kick the ball and miss by a mile and then fall over their own feet, they get in a knot with other kids and none of them can seem to connect with the ball, or when they do there’s no predicting which direction the ball will go. Luckily this year it’s indoors so they spend far less time chasing wayward balls, haha! And we sit behind glass so I don’t have to worry about getting hit, either!

  3. Cute card, and oh so personal!! Yes! We MUST stand up for our teams, no matter where we live. I love your personal story/explanation, life is always important to allow into our cards.
(side note: Hubbs is from Colorado, so yes the Denver Broncos are rooted for; and I’m from Washington, so yes the Seahawks are rooted for. We’ve had people ask how we stay married! But we see it that we win no matter which team does!)

  4. A perfect fit for the challenge, Jaydee! Glad you had time to play with us at HSS this round. Cheers, Jolanda – DT

  5. A fun card for the challenge and great for so many occasions! I love this bundle and now I just might have to get it! Thanks for joining the hand stamped sentiments challenge!
