Lisa Horton Christmas Robin for Just Us Girls Challenge #804

Happy Friday – again! I needed some crafting time and went looking for some inspiration. Luckily the Just Us Girls team have started their 2026 challenges and I was able to play with their die week challenge. I brought out a Waffle Flower Woodgrain background die and paired it with a new die that I got for Christmas. It’s a die called Christmas Robin and is made by Lisa Horton.

Here’s a sneak peek:

I love me a European robin 🙂 They are amazingly cute little birds but don’t let their cute exterior fool you – the males are extremely territorial. However, they are beloved by British gardeners as they are curious and will readily come to feeders, and may even visit while you are gardening in hope of catching a juicy worm! They are very different to the North American robin as they are much smaller and belong to different genera. I always get excited when I see a little robin flitting in the undergrowth, especially at Christmas where there bright colored breast really pops. They are called redbreast, but their color is really much more rusty orange than red and their backs and flanks are more grey than brown. Now that you have read more than you ever wanted to read about European Robins – let’s take a look at the challenge from JUGS 🙂

The badge says coverplate, but the detail says we can use dies – so I used a woodgrain die from Waffle Flower to create my background. Although this die comes with a stencil, I decided not to color the background as it detracted too much from my bird. Instead I left it clean. You can see all the detail from the die and I separated it from my little robin with a white stitched tag.

I die-cut the elements for my bird and decided not to do any blending, but just leave the colors as they are. I really do like the grey/brown and orange colors together. I used a sentiment from Waffle Flower and thought that the Warm Wishes would work for anytime during winter.

I did add a couple of vellum snowflakes on the top upper left corner, but they are a little heard to see on the photo.

Here’s my full card:

And, in case you are interested – here’s a photo I borrowed from Wikipedia of the European Robin so you can see the true colors.

Isn’t he a cutie! They really are delightful little things!

I know the talented team at JUGS would love it if you played along with their challenge! I’ll be back later in the week with another card. In the meantime, warm hugs and prayers for those of you who need a little lift tonight.

Card recipe:

  • Background die: Woodgrain Texture – Waffle Flower
  • Bird: Christmas Robin – Lisa Horton
  • Sentiment: Cozy Holiday Sentiments – Waffle Flower

Hugs

  1. Such a pretty card, Jaydee! Whenever I see a robin, it makes me think of a friend of my mom’s named Robin who plays Words With Friends with me every day 🙂 I love how you kept the background of the card white, even with the die patterns on it, so the colors of your robin and his branch really stand out. Just lovely!

  2. Jaydee… love the word grain impression plate you used for that adorable!! robin. I have to tell you that your Christmas card was returned to me. I thought you moved two years ago… reach out by email and let me know the address, and I will send you a new card! Thanks so much for joining the Just Us Girls gallery for the New Year!

  3. Beautiful robin! I love the info you provided, the real photo and of course your card most of all. Your interpretation is perfect for the robin, as well as the challenge.

  4. Jaydee, I love that woodgrain coverplate! And the adorable die cut birdie on a tag was a great addition! Thanks so much for adding your card to our challenge this week!
