Cockatoo’s for Paper Players #475

Hi Everyone.

Happy Sunday.  It;s the fabulous Joanne's turn to host our Paper Players challenge this week and it's sketch week.  I absolutely loved the sketch that Joanne came up with.  It was also the perfect opportunity to showcase a die set that Lou brought back from Oz.  I loved that he visited a scrapbook/crafting store for me whilst he was down in Oz.  I mean…. how amazing was that???

The die that he bought for me was a perfect fit for Joanne's sketch:

I die cut – and colored – six birds.  I also used my pencils to add some detail around the wings.  When I made this card, the devastating fires were not ravaging so many parts of Australia.  I cannot even describe the sadness that I feel at the loss of millions of animals.  The cause is not a political discussion.  Whether you believe that global warming is being accelerated by the selfishness of man or not… this isn't the discussion.  It's what is happening to these defenseless animals… that's what breaks my heart.  But… more about that later in the week.  In the meantime, here is the card that I made for this challenge:

Cockatoos (1 of 1)

I used an old branch die-cut to provide a perch.  I added detail to the die-cut cockatoo by coloring their crest, their beaks and their wings.  I've been seen lucky to see them in the wild.  They really are amazing.  You can read more about them here.

On a personal note:

This week has been much busier at work that I ever thought it would be!  Consequently, I have not had the down-time that I expected – or, quite frankly, needed!  I did get to spend a couple of hours in my craft room today, though and I really enjoyed it.  Consequently, I do have a couple of cards to share with you this week. 

In the meantime, I wanted to share a photo of one of our visitors.  This guy is smart!  Not only is he amazingly agile on the wing, he is incredibly inventive.  He's learned that he can come around the corner at amazing speeds and scare the local bird population.  He forces them to fly into windows, or the siding of a house in such a way that they hit the hard surfaces and are stunned.  He is then able to feast at leisure.  Now, I am a great believer that nature must have her own way, but I do discourage him at feeders, where he has an advantage.  So, we will chase him off if we see him.  However, you can not give him credit for being so inventive.  The next time you hear someone call someone a bird brain – trust me.. it's more of a compliment than they will ever know.

  5. This card is just fabulous Jaydee – these cockatoos remind me of the one that used to be on Playschool on the TV when I was little, but I digress – this is such a brilliant take on the sketch and the subtle colouring gives these birds such a realistic appearance! I LOVE it!!

  7. I admire your beautiful and creative take on the sketch Jaydee, which works so perfectly with these gorgeous birds! Love the subtle blue blended around the edges and the inspirational sentiment!
    That’s one gorgeous hawk. Love the raptors but I’m always sad when I see them take a songbird, so I think it’s great that you chase this one off when you see it!

  9. Jaydee, I love what you did with the sketch! Those cockatoos are so fun and the sentiment is the perfect touch. That hawk is stunning although his sneaky shenanigans are not. Ha! He’s just doing what he was born to do, I suppose. We have one that frequents our yard and we chase him off as well. Hope you enjoy your weekend, my friend! Hugs!

  13. Thanks, Jeanne. I really liked the way the cockatoo’s turned out! As for our bird….. well…. he’s a Coopers or a Sharp Shinned hawk… it’s almost impossible to tell the two apart. However, because we get such a great shot of his tail – I believe this to be a Sharp Shinned Hawk. He really is an amazing bird – really smart1
