Hi Everyone. Happy Thursday
I made a Halloween card tonight. Yep. I did. It is so rare that I do that, that I didn't even buy the Piece of Poison stamp set – I did the MDS version instead!!! And, after playing around with it tonight, I am so glad I did. Cos I could re-size all those little meeces (mice for the rest of us who don't remember Mr Jinks!)
I saw this really gorgeous card across at casestudychallenge and went way off in a different direction color wise. For some reason.. and I have absolutely no idea why, I decided to use the layout and create this halloween card.
Once again, out came the Mocha Morning DSP. You guys cannot tell me that I haven't shown you an amazing array of different things to do with this DSP! It also gave me an excuse to bring out the black lace ribbon from retirement and add an antique brad. So, check out the gorgeous card across at casestudy. I used the focal layer and clean lines of the design for my inspiration and used flocked DSP instead of a stamp for the background. Instead of the flower in the top left hand corner, I did the lace holder and antique brad as the "holder" for my tag.
The whole of the focal image was printed on to Sahara Sand DSP. and the skeleton was colored with a gel pen, as were the tails and eyes of the "live" mice. The two in the skeleton's hands are not alive, consequently, they don't have sparkly tales and eyes :-) I don't know… you can blame the happenings in Ohio over the last two days (still steaming about that) – and the idiot who decided to shoot the red-tailed hawk through the head with a nail gun in California- for my bleak card tonight. What is it with these people. …..Anyway…. back to my card
I love the clean lines, the DSP gives so much texture, along with the ribbon and the gel pen adds just the right amoung of ghoulishness even in normal light. I love the different size mice around the skeleton's feet. Reminds me of the pied piper of Hamlin! 🙂
So, what do you think? Can you see the layout from the inspiration card in my card? Don't you love that skeleton. I decided his hands really needed something, so gave him a bigger mouse in one, and a little dangly one in the other.
I don't often play around with MDS for cards, but seriously, if you see something you like, and know you won't use it that often, MDS is a small amount to pay. So long as you have a printer that prints on card stock (and I know do!!!) it's a worthwhile investment.
Card recipe – all ingredients Stampin' Up!
- Card stock: Basic Black, Sahara Sand
- Stamps: MDS version of Piece of Poison
- DSP: Mocha Morning
- Accessories: Black Lace Ribbon (retired); Antique Brad
- Tools: MDS, Gel pen, Stampin Dimensionals
On a personal note:
Thank you to all of you who left a message for me last night.. I really was upset about the happenings in Ohio. I had tried to avoid the coverage and was not aware of the sheer number of tigers until I read my messages last night. That incensed me even more. They are endangered animals for heavens sake. Most people don't need one – never mind nearly 20. The sad thing is that so many of those animals were completely lost and unsure once their cages had been opened. It is a phenomenon not unknown to caged animals. Which is why so many of them were still so close to their cages not knowing where to go, or what to do. Beverly, I hadn't thought about the people who were so close who could have actually helped.
Ann R, welcome to our little blog family :-) We are glad that you find a little peace and connection here. I started my blog back in 2009 as a way to maybe attract SU customers and as a place to house my cards for challenges. Little did I realize that my SU business would be the least of the reasons why I continue this blog. It's my regular readers and commenters that keep me doing this so regularly. The connection with all of you means a great deal. I have met some amazing people through this blog – virtually in physically – and yes, I did get a couple of SU customers. Adelle, Robin K and Beverly. Well.. Robin led me to Beverly! and I am so glad to have gotten to know all three of you.
My blog also introduced me to Missy, Beth, Germaine, Trish (we miss you Trish), Soozie, Linda, Jan A, Kelly, Rach, Lesley, Andi, Ann, AM, Jodi, Cam, Lynn, Sue, Ruth Ann, Cindy, Marcia, Jeanne, Rita, Terri, Sally, Linda, Lori, Judi, , Doris, Barbara, Yvonne, Cyndi, Patricia, Sandra, Tammy, Marge, Christy, Michelle, Amy, Monika, Elizabeth… some of you visit regularly and comment, some of you only when something really strikes you. Others visit and don't leave a comment. Some of you come for the cards, some for pictures from my garden. You have laughed with me (remember the turtle story, anyone?!), some of you have cried with me (Trish, anyone?) Whatever your reasons for visiting, you leave a little bit of yourselves and I am grateful.
I hope you have a beautiful Friday. One filled with love and laughter and joy. Do something kind for an animal will you, if you can. Just for me?
Prayers and especially warm hugs for those of you who need a lift today.
Jaydee

I’m with you on the animals, Jaydee, I think it was a crime not to tranquilize them and set them free on a reservation. I could not look at the coverage after the first picture. Where has compassion gone? Marge
I don’t usually make Halloween cards either but this one is beautiful! The lace is what makes this card amazing and I love how you tucked it into the second layer. Thanks!
Ugh! I will try this again….for some reason my post will not post for you.
BOO! You scared me this morning! Oh the DSP, stamp set and just the way you did the layout…well I tell ya *I LOVE IT* Now please let me know if I am missing something here with my MDS. How did you get the stamp set FREE in your MDS?
It is just sicking that they killed all of those animals…I guess every day we learn a new lesson in life. I sure hope that the animals find good homes. Ohio sure has made the news all week.
Have a great weekend!
Jaydee, I totally agree with you about the animals. It brings tears to my eyes each time I see anything about it on the news. It is very disheartening. I hope it will bring about some change in the law so that this never happens again.
I love your card! I’m trying to use my MDS a bit more and have been playing around with it trying to finish a project to get printed. It is such a fun program. I would have never thought to use the Mocha Morning for Halloween, but it works great!
Jaydee,
Cool card! I don’t make Halloween cards even though I probably should. Having four family October birthdays should be reason enough, but I tend to go the birthday route instead with them. And I’ve never jumped onto the MDS train. It scares me. Maybe some day. You make it sound very easy Jaydee. I guess I just like the feel of paper and embellishments too much. The time factor with MDS does appeal to me however.
I’m still very upset about all that has happened and the injustice. I did read yesterday that Jack Hanna from the Columbus zoo is working with the govenor of Ohio to make sure laws are in place for this to never happen again here. Let’s hope that that will be the case.
Jaydee, I missed the turtle story. Wonder if I can search your blog to find it? You have a special blog and I’m so thankful and blessed to have been able to discover it. It’s my favorite way to spend my first cup of coffee every morning!
I visit with you each day and you inspire me. I don’t always comment but your art work is amazing. Thanks for sharing a part of your life and work with us. You are one in a million.
I really don’t make Halloween cards–not sure why. I’ve got nieces and nephews who would probably enjoy them. Hm.
The card is wonderful! I’ve not got MDS, but I can see where it would be quite helpful to have. I cannot believe how absolutely versatile that Mocha Morning DSP is. It’s incredible!
The exotic animals…I can’t even think about it it makes me so unbelievably angry. :o(
Finally, I can’t imagine NOT stopping by daily. You have created such a fun and happy place here, Jaydee. Thank you for that! :o) And, yes, the turtle story still brings a smile to my face. :o)
Hugs!
P.S. Hiya Lou! Hope all is well! :o)
Pretty cool Halloween card!
I enjoyed the “walk down memory lane” about your blog. It is always on my to do list when I sit down at the computer!
Your blog has led me to Rach’s amazing blog and I have really enjoyed hers too.
Blessings to you ladies who take the time to do all the photography and writing to share with us.
You used one of my favorite sets from the mini: I love Piece of Poison. Now who doesn’t need a brain stamp? Guess that’s the scientist in me.
So sad about all the destruction of those magnificent creatures, so I am not tuning into the news at the moment. Way too sad.
Jaydee, you always inspire me, and not just artistically for making cards (I sure do need help in THAT department). But you do inspire me to leave posts. Normally I am just the voyeur watching on the sideline with blogs and not writing on many at all, which is odd since in the “real world” I am so outgoing, just computer shy??? But somehow it just seems fitting to post on your blog. Thanks for making me feel at home.
I love your MDS Halloween card! This is one set I had to have because of the skeleton! The lace and brad are the perfect touches. I do not even get me started on Ohio…
You always give me a lift just seeing your wonderful creations and reading your posts!
This is very scary! All those “eek-y” mice! Yikes! Really like how you did this card with the blacks/grays. I’m not much for Halloween at all but do have to make the cards for all the grandchildren so I’ll have to remember this one for sure (since I’ve already finished mine for the year – thank goodness! LOL).
Very nice.
Lynn
Jaydee – what a great card! That Mocha Morning DSP is just fantabulous – I still haven’t ordered it yet but will soon. Love how you incorporated mice which I am not all that fond of but it looks great with the card.
I am with you on the senseless events in OH and am deeply saddened for everyone who was involved with this horrible tragedy. It is not something that they can forget nor anyone can forget.
I really like your card and I am equally saddened by the insane and useless death of those animals. My heart goes out to the widow of the poor man who did this and then killed himself. What a horrible waste.
