Birds of a Feather – Happy Birthday

Hi Everyone.  Happy Wednesday.

One of the classes for the AECP is Irresistible Inking Techniques.  One of the lessons is a technique that I haven't used since I purchased my Misti a couple of years ago.  Because I use my Misti for all of my stamping these days, my stamping blocks are tucked away gathering dust.  So, when I saw one of the lessons was to use your stamp block to create a quick and easy background, I was excited as I had forgotten what a great technique it is.

I inked up my rectangle stamp block and carefully placed it horizontally across my card base.  It took me just a couple of minutes to get a great textured background to act as the sky behind my bird.  I love the imperfect look that it leaves:

Once the background was ready, I started on creating my bird.  The great thing about the new Altenew Birds of a Feather set is that it is a layered, modular set, allowing you to create any number of color combos to fit your mood.  One of the birds that occasionally visits our garden (far too rarely for my linking) is the Scarlet Tanager – they are amazingly beautiful birds, so I decided I would pay homage to them with this card.

Here's a photo from my blog way back in 2013

And if you want to see a much better photo of him – and read all about him – you can check him out here – he really is gorgeous.

I stamped the bird elements in red and black, but gave him yellow beak and legs to break up the colors a little and then die-cut him out.  I die-cut the branch and instead of stamping the branch and then die-cutting it, I worked with just the die-cut and colored it with the direct to paper technique using just two different color brown stamp pads.  As the bird was going to be against the blue "sky" I decided to fussy cut around the bird to get rid of the small white border.  I then adhered both of them to the card base and stamped the sentiment.

.This was such a easy card to put together and is one of those cards that will easily go through the post with no extra postage required!

I had fun creating this card and need to remember to use this technique more often:-)

On a personal note:

Oh… it's cold… but at least the sun is shining.   I took this photo of Charlie on his favorite blanket on the back of the couch last night.  The light from the lamp above him was obviously much too much…. or else he didn't like what was going on in the Olympics!

How cute is that?!!!

I'll be back tomorrow with another card.  In the meantime, warm hugs and prayers for those of you who need a little lift tonight.

Hugs

Jaydee

  1. Love how the backyard nature inspired you! Love the cardinal and your rendition is awesome! The blue background is so poetic with this design!! GREAT job!

  2. It never ceases to amaze me that no matter the theme, you knock it out of the park! It is so “you” that you would create a beautiful bird card!!!!!!
I am so, so ready for spring to come. Sadly I think we are still a number of weeks away. ☹️I think Charlie is simply tired of winter and simply can’t bear to look at it. One. Second. Longer.
So you asked for ways of adding sparkle…god old glitter and some glue!!!!!!

  3. Great technique to make the pretty sky for the backdrop to the beautiful bird. Pretty card. Enjoy your day!

  4. Oh Jaydee, love your tanager card! The background looks amazing and that’s a technique I forget about using!
How lucky you are to see these pretty little birds. I’ve never seen one and clicked on your link to hear their song and learn about them. They sure have a distinctive sound and beautiful markings!
Charlie is about the sweetest kitty and so very photogenic!

  5. Hi Charlie! Good to see you. Thanks Jaydee for posting pics of him. I hope the snow the next few days doesn’t cause problems for all of us. I am tired of snow, although I usually love it.
