Happy Monday. I hope you all had a great weekend. I certainly did. Except… it's snowing this morning. Yep! We have already had over an inch of snow!
As my regular blog readers will know, I recently attended the onlinecardclasses clean and simple 3 card class. The class was focused on one layer cards, but not all of them were strictly one layer, but they were certainly clean and simple. One of the techniques used for a few of the cards was masking. I've already done several cards using the masking technique.
This one though is slightly different, as one of the challenges was to create our own stencils from an existing die. I decided to use the Hexagon Hive die and mask off an area at the top of the card. I was able to do some sponge stamping on the home-made stencil and then used that same stencil to add some versamark to some of the hexagons. The masking allowed me to keep some of the hexagons free of versamark and then add heat and stick powder to the areas that were versamarked. I added some Distress Glitter to those areas to add some dimension. Here's a closeup to show you what I mean:
Isn't that pretty. I love the effect. Especially when you see it on the whole card. To finish off the card, I cut a label from the Apothecary Labels dies and stamped the "smile" sentiment from the Happy Day set. To add a little more detail and focus on the sentiment, I took a black marker and dashed some lines around the label. It really helps to frame the sentiment, and to highlight the shape of the label.

You can see I sponged the Crushed Curry label to add some shades of color – to match the hexagon background and added a couple of rhinestones just to finish it off! The sentiment was stamped with Versamark and heat set with black embossing powder just to give a little more shine. Well, I hope this card brightened your day!
On a personal note:
Errr… have I told you lately that I'm ready for spring. ENOUGH ALREADY! However, I do know that there are signs of spring on the way. Yesterday we heard our first two Red Shouldered Blackbirds. Just two of them! Luckily, we have lots of seed out for them.
We also saw a new bird in the garden yesterday, chasing the doves. He wasn't much bigger than the doves themselves, which really caught our attention. Luckily, he hung out on the "stump" for a while, so we were able to get a really good look at him. He tried several times to catch a dove, but they were just a little too fast for him! What was it? A Merlin! You can read all about him here – and when I will try and load a photo that I took of him tomorrow. It's been such a long winter, it must have been very tough for the birds of prey.
Well, I had better get moving! I need to pack up some of my crafting "stuff" as Lou is coming down to paint my craft room and there's no way we can move my crafting cupboard with all of my goodies in it!

You come up with the most Awesome cards. Nice touch on the distress glitter.
Spring has sprung here. Planted over 160 onion sets of the red, yellow and white onions and also planted some pepper plants as well.
Yard mowing this afternoon besides spray painting a couple items for my container bed. Need to get as much done today before our rains move in come tomorrow.

Hi Jaydee! This is such a fun look for cards! I love how some of the hexagons are glittered and some not. Just beautiful, warm, and so cheerful!
I had to look at your Merlin to see if I recognized him and I didn’t. What a beautiful bird! We had a Ring-necked Pheasant in your yard about a month ago that took us by surprise. I live in a subdivision four houses down from a 150 acre park with some open fields. I’ve never seen one before but I think he was looking to snack on our birdseed with the harsh winter. He was only here during the last winter blast, about two weeks, and moved on. Good thing since we have two labs that were very interested in finding his hiding spot!
Fun fun fun card, Jaydee! I love the shimmery glitter and how stenciling can create a faux layer. Sunshiney and happy. Perfect!
A merlin?? How awesome is that!
We’ve noticed our feeders have been emptied faster and faster of late as the warmer weather has not come and the birds seem to be so hungry. It’s definitely been a loooooong winter.
